Crystallography and Cultural Heritage: IIC Conference

(13 July 2018) The Italian Institute of Culture of Melbourne will host Gilberto Artioli, Professor of Mineralogy and Crystallography of the University of Padua, on the occasion of the 22nd Meeting of the International Mineralogical Association (13th – 17th August, 2018). The teacher is in Melbourne for the XXII Meeting of the International Mineralogical Association (13-17 August). The conference, held in English, will focus on crystallography and materials science as fundamental instruments for representing and understanding different natured materials, including those that are part of the cultural heritage. Among the objectives of science applied to cultural heritage is the diagnostics, authentication, conservation, and interpretation of human artefacts dating back to antiquity. In this regard, some invasive and non-invasive techniques applied to cultural heritage materials will be briefly presented, as well as case studies such as the one concerning the origin of Eneolithic metals and Etruscan numerals.
