Italy and Zambia: Cooperation for a Sustainable Future

During the third joint mission of the Italian Cooperation system in the African continent, which took place in South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, and Malawi, a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) for cooperation in the field of sustainable development was signed between the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security and the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment of the Republic of Zambia. The MoU was signed by the Italian Ambassador to Lusaka, Enrico De Agostini, and the Zambian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe. Environmental cooperation between Italy and Zambia began in 2018 with the signing of an initial memorandum of understanding with the Zambian Ministry of National Development, which focused on promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency, as well as integrated and sustainable management of water, waste, and soil resources. The planned actions include improving water resource management and protecting and restoring water-related ecosystems; promoting access to sustainable, renewable, and efficient energy; encouraging sustainable consumption and production models; strengthening and coordinating efforts to combat climate change and address its adverse effects; protecting, restoring, and enhancing the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainable forest management, combating desertification, land degradation, and biodiversity loss; and strengthening the global partnership for sustainable development.
