Minister Tajani calls for pragmatic EU policy on Syria at Brussels meeting

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, is in Brussels to participate in the European Union Foreign Affairs Council (FAC). The meeting, chaired by High Representative Josep Borrell, will open with a working session dedicated to the Russian aggression against Ukraine, in which Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba will also participate. "We will continue to support the importance of military assistance to Kyiv, calling for unity and cohesion," declared Minister Tajani. This will be followed by an exchange on the situation in the Middle East. Regarding the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, Tajani stated: "We want to keep the dialogue open with all parties involved, according to an approach that is enabling the success of the Food for Gaza initiative, carried out by Italy in collaboration with Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Jordan, as well as the UN Food Agencies in Rome, the Red Cross, and other key actors of the national system." Minister Tajani will also intervene, together with other Member States, to request greater EU attention towards Syria and, consequently, a revision of the EU Strategy for Syria, which dates back to 2017. "Our goal is a more pragmatic and proactive policy on Syria to increase the effectiveness of our humanitarian assistance and to create the conditions for the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of Syrian refugees. This is the only path to stability in the region." (9colonne)
