Lo Spirito di Stella, the barrier-free catamaran, arrives in the Horn of Africa

The catamaran Lo Spirito di Stella has arrived at the port of Djibouti in the Horn of Africa, welcomed by military, civil, and religious authorities, along with a warm crowd of onlookers. This unique vessel, the only one of its kind with no architectural barriers and fully accessible to people with disabilities, is part of the Wheels on Waves (WoW) project. It carries an important message worldwide—one also shared by the armed forces: leave no one behind. The WoW project, supported by the Ministry of Defense, aims to bring together people from different cultures, both disabled and non-disabled, offering them the opportunity to experience and share life at sea aboard a special sailing boat. Its goal is to promote respect for the rights of people with disabilities and raise awareness about building a more inclusive world. Lo Spirito di Stella set sail from Genoa on November 18, 2023. During its journey, military personnel on active duty and athletes from the Paralympic Sports Group of the Defense Ministry have taken turns on board, supporting their rehabilitation, social reintegration, and employment transition. The catamaran is currently docked at the Djibouti Coast Guard pier, where guided tours are being held on board.
