Campania is set to welcome a major scientific landmark: the largest planetarium in Europe. Named San Pietro, the project is funded by the Campania Region and will benefit from a collaboration between the local administration and the academic world.
The cooperation agreement, signed today between the University of Naples Federico II and the Municipality of Montecorvino Rovella, marks a crucial step toward the creation of a cutting-edge scientific hub.
"Federico II is committed to working with the Municipality of Montecorvino Rovella to make use of an extraordinary new planetarium that will not only entertain and showcase the beauty of the cosmos," said Rector Matteo Lorito, "but will also serve as a structure dedicated to science and research, paving the way for new discoveries."
The facility, already partially completed, will become a true scientific laboratory where students can engage in supplementary educational activities and internships, PhD candidates will contribute to the design and implementation of research projects, and researchers will have access to state-of-the-art technology for studying the universe.
"It will be the largest planetarium in Europe. We want it to become a study center, and we have chosen Federico II to provide students with the opportunity to learn and train in a modern and innovative facility," stated Mayor Martino D’Onofrio.
The agreement outlines the development of joint programs in orientation, education, research, and scientific dissemination, laying the foundation for a new center of excellence in the region.
