Maddalena Spanu dominates the WingFoil racing World Cup in Dakhla

The first stage of the WingFoil Racing World Cup concluded yesterday in Dakhla, Morocco, after an intense competition held from March 19 to 23. Thanks to an outstanding, flawless performance, Maddalena Spanu, an athlete from the Young Azzurra program of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, secured victory at the event with 17 wins out of 17 races.

The competition in Morocco kicked off on March 19, marking the start of five challenging days, especially due to varying weather conditions, ranging from light to strong winds of about 25/30 knots. The first day's schedule included four long-distance races, but only one was completed, in which Spanu claimed victory. The following day was a forced rest due to a lack of wind, which returned on the third day, making the final three days highly intense. On the third day, eight races were completed, followed by seven on the next. The qualification rounds ended with a total of 16 races, and Spanu’s excellent performance secured her spot in the final with 16 consecutive wins.

Yesterday, on the final day, the Medal Race took place. Maddalena entered the water ready for the ultimate sprint, knowing that just one more victory would secure the event title. “I had a great time in all the races," Spanu commented. "Competing with new athletes and crossing the finish line with a good margin was truly exciting. I’m very happy with the result and the training work that allowed me to perform at my best. My next goal is the European Championship in Turkey, where I will try to give my all.”

The WingFoil Racing European Championship will be held in Urla, Turkey, from May 20 to 24, where Spanu will aim to defend the title she won last year in Switzerland.
