London – Italian journalist and Rai’s UK correspondent Marco Varvello presented his latest book, London, the Halls of Power, at the Italian Embassy in London. The event featured a panel discussion with Deborah Bonetti, director of the Foreign Press Association; Nicol Degli Innocenti, UK correspondent for Il Sole 24 Ore; and Bill Emmott, chairman of the International Institute for Strategic Studies and former editor of The Economist.
“With his vast experience and deep knowledge of British society and politics, Varvello offers a sharp and insightful portrait of London – a city at the heart of history, power, and complex dynamics that influence not only the UK but, in our globalised world, Europe and beyond,” said Deputy Ambassador Riccardo Smimmo.
Blending reportage, political analysis, and firsthand testimony, the book takes readers through a pivotal decade for the UK – from Brexit to the evolving relationship with the EU, from the end of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign to the dawn of King Charles’s monarchy. Varvello guides readers through symbolic locations of political and social change: from Westminster and Downing Street to Buckingham Palace, from the American Embassy to neighbourhoods such as East End and Kentish Town – dubbed the “new Islington” of the progressive left.
