Piantedosi in Morocco: cooperation on security and migration

Rabat - On June 11th, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi visited Morocco, where he met with his counterpart Abdelouafi Laftit and the Minister of Habous and Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Toufiq. Piantedosi praised Morocco as a valuable ally of Italy and a crucial reference point for stability and effective management of security and migratory challenges in both the Mediterranean and Atlantic regions. The Italian government is actively working to combat human trafficking in key countries of origin and transit, strengthen legal migration pathways, and improve assisted voluntary returns for migrants. The meeting also covered various important topics, including anti-terrorism security, enhancing cooperation between police forces, combating drug trafficking, and cooperation between fire brigades in managing natural disasters. Particular attention was given to the activities of individuals suspected of terrorist affiliations, the exchange of experiences in promoting de-radicalization, and the fight against religious extremism. Piantedosi emphasized Morocco's role as a model of openness and tolerance, highlighted by its significant interfaith dialogue initiatives. He also informed Minister Toufiq about an agreement between the Italian Ministry of the Interior and the European Commission to fund a program for professional training for migrants, facilitating their integration into Italy.
