Beyond headlines: investigative journalism in action at FIRE

Gaza - From international conflicts to housing precarity, prisons, LGBTQIA+ rights, abortion, and feminist movements—these are the focal points of the third edition of the Festival of Investigative Journalism and Reportage (FIRE), hosted by the Centro di giornalismo permanente collective in Rome's Pigneto district from today until June 22. The event promises five days filled with debates, photo exhibitions, and free workshops at Parco del Torrione on Via Prenestina, in collaboration with Arci Sparwasser, A Buon Diritto, and Irpi Media.

This year’s lineup features esteemed international guests: Marta Lempart, co-founder of the Women's Strike who led protests for abortion rights in Poland; Lamine Benghazi, head of the Justice and Rule of Law program at Avocats Sans Frontières (ASF) in Tunisia; Palestinian journalist Safwat Khalout, recently returned from Gaza to Italy; Haggai Matar, executive director of +972; and Yulia Vaganova, director of the Khanenko Museum in Kyiv. Among the attending journalists are Chiara Cruciati (Il Manifesto), Costanza Spocci (Radio3), Giulia Siviero (Il Post), Paola Caridi, Chiara Avesani (Presadiretta), Veronica Fernandez (RaiNews), Daniele Raineri (La Repubblica), and Luca Chianca (Report).

FIRE begins today at 6:30 PM with "Another Photojournalism: Stories Behind the News," showcasing exhibitions by Natàlia Alana, Valerio Muscella, Daniela Sala, and Giovanni Culmone. At 8:30 PM, the discussion shifts to North Africa, where journalists and experts will explore significant recent changes amid issues of repression and resistance. Also on the agenda is a special focus on the role of journalism in light of ongoing events in Gaza, addressing concerns of censorship and self-censorship within media narratives, featuring international guests and Palestinian journalists, scheduled for Friday, June 21 at 8:30 PM.
