New WFP project launched to combat malnutrition in Gaza with Italian support

Today marks the launch of a project initiated by the World Food Programme to address the severe malnutrition affecting the population of Gaza. The aid plan, supported by a 12 million euro contribution from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will provide approximately 4,000 tons of food supplies to the most vulnerable families and includes the distribution of bread and other food items prepared by Gaza's network of bakers supported by the WFP. The goal is to ensure food access for 1.1 million residents of the Gaza Strip over the next two months.

“The implementation of the WFP-Farnesina project represents an additional component of the 'Food for Gaza' initiative aimed at alleviating the suffering of the population in the Strip,” commented Antonio Tajani, highlighting that “resolving the Middle Eastern conflict and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza are priorities on the government’s agenda and for the Italian G7 Presidency.”

The WFP-Farnesina project follows the recent delivery of over 60 tons of food and medical supplies collected by the Italian government, which arrived by air from Brindisi to Jordan last week as part of the “Food for Gaza” initiative, and will soon be transferred to the Strip. Additionally, a state-of-the-art scanner has been provided by the Port Authority of Gioia Tauro, in coordination with the Customs Agency and Civil Protection, for the “maritime corridor” to the Strip.
