Eni Award: celebrating young african talent in science

Rome - The Eni Awards were presented at the Quirinale in the presence of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, the Chairman of Eni’s Board of Directors, Giuseppe Zafarana, and the CEO of Eni, Claudio Descalzi. This year, there is once again a section dedicated to young talents from Africa, established in 2017 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Eni Awards. In this edition, four awards were given to Favour Agbajor from Durban University of Technology (South Africa), Petra Kienyiy Chui from Egerton University (Kenya), Lakhdar Hamidatou from the Ecole Nationale Polytechnique de Constantine (Algeria), and Nomthandazo Precious Sibiya from Durban University of Technology (South Africa). They will receive a scholarship to pursue a Ph.D. at prestigious Italian universities to deepen and develop their innovative ideas elaborated during their master’s thesis. Favour Agbajor has developed innovative models that integrate the design and operation of buildings with renewable energy systems, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality. Petra Kienyiy Chui has assessed the levels and established the characteristics of microplastics and water quality in the Njoro River and Lake Nakuru in Kenya. Lakhdar Hamidatou has experimentally developed and validated a removable cooling kit for commercial photovoltaic panels, which uses bio-based phase change materials. Finally, Nomthandazo Precious Sibiya has developed a magnetic coagulation separation technique for wastewater treatment.
