From Monday to Friday, BigItalyFocus provides an information overview, ranged from development aid to made in Italy
Starting March 15th, the Frankfurter Westend Galerie in Frankfurt presents a new exhibition featuring works by Giovanni Cerri, titled "Die Reise Hält An... Storie e immagini di migrazioni (The Journey Continues…)". Cerri's works have previously been exhibited at the gallery in 2013 and 2019.
The exhibition explores Italian immigration to Germany between the 1950s and 1970s, marking the 70th anniversary of the bilateral Italo-German agreement for the recruitment and placement of Italian labor in Germany. Thematically, it connects to the exhibition held at the Galata Museo del Mare in Genoa in collaboration with the Museo Italo Americano in San Francisco, which in the spring of 2024 focused on the epic migration by sea to the United States between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
For the new generation of migrants featured in this exhibition, the train becomes a symbol of hope, carrying them on the long and uncertain journey from southern Italy to northern Europe, where they found work primarily in major automobile factories, steel mills, and mines.
Cerri documents both the historical and emotional aspects of these vast migratory movements, capturing the expressions of travelers, the moment of departure, and their suitcases. To do so, he integrates historical photographs and newspaper clippings into his drawings and paintings as collage elements. Alongside portraits of travelers, Cerri also depicts the defining features of the era—factories, steel plants, and mines—as well as the isolation of immigrant workers and the hardships of life in the working-class outskirts of northern Euro
