Munich – As part of the “European May” celebrations, the European cultural institutes of Munich are continuing their “European Cinema Classics” series at the Werkstattkino, this time with a focus on masterpieces from the 1970s.
The decade was marked by major political and social transformations across Europe: the fall of the last Western dictatorships, the tightening of authoritarian regimes in the East, terrorism and armed resistance, civil rights and labour movements, challenges to traditional social norms, the pursuit of alternative lifestyles, a cultural drive for experimentation, and the rise of television as the dominant medium.
What films did European audiences see during those years? The program features works by great European directors, from Costa-Gavras to Víctor Erice, Karel Kachyňa to Heiner Carow. Representing Italy, Ettore Scola’s masterpiece A Special Day (Una giornata particolare) will be screened on May 18 at 8 PM in its original version with English subtitles. (9colonne)
