London – Thoughts in the Roots is the title of the retrospective dedicated to the Italian artist and Arte Povera representative Giuseppe Penone, now open to the public in London until September 7.
Curated by Claude Adjil, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Alexa Chow, the exhibition is the most extensive ever held in the UK on the artist’s work.
Hosted at the Serpentine South and extending into the surrounding park, the show features monumental outdoor sculptures that continue Penone’s exploration of the natural world.
His works are deeply influenced by the wooded landscapes of Piedmont, his home region.
Spanning from 1969 to the present, the exhibition highlights Penone’s innovative use of materials — including wood, iron, wax, bronze, terracotta, marble, and plaster — to reveal the hidden rhythms and structures of nature.
The show includes three monumental outdoor bronze sculptures placed in the Kensington Gardens.
