Jakarta – “Brewing the Future: Innovation and Sustainability for Indonesian Coffee” was the theme of an event hosted by the Italian Cultural Institute in Jakarta, organized by Roberto Carniel, the scientific attaché at the Italian Embassy, to mark the Italian Research Day Worldwide. The gathering, introduced by IIC Director Maria Battaglia, showcased the key role of science and innovation in making coffee a sustainable model, while strengthening Italy–Indonesia ties. Italian Ambassador Roberto Colaminè emphasized the symbolic value of coffee as a cultural bridge, calling for deeper scientific cooperation between the two countries. Professor Marco Zancani highlighted the “Ernesto Illy” Master’s in Coffee Economics and Science, which includes Indonesian students among its participants. Azzurra Di Bonaventura presented her research on Coffea arabica in vitro cultivation for cosmetic and pharmaceutical use. From the Indonesian side, Soni Harsono introduced agroforestry models that help coffee farms become more resilient to climate change. Entrepreneur Nicola Finardi shared the sustainable coffee project from Flores Island. Finally, Alain Scialoja discussed how data-driven approaches can enhance quality and traceability in artisanal micro-roasting. A real example of applied scientific diplomacy, this collaboration promotes both environmental protection and community development.
