Modern pentathlon: Giorgio Malan leads seven Italians at the European Championships

The Italian modern pentathlon team has traveled to Madrid for the European Championships, which run until July 27. The team includes seven athletes—four women and three men—representing Italy in the continental competition hosted by the Spanish capital. Leading the squad is Giorgio Malan, bronze medalist at the Paris 2024 Olympics, who also won the World Cup stage in Pazardzhik earlier this season. Alongside Malan, Matteo Bovenzi and Roberto Micheli will compete in the men's events. The women’s team includes Aurora Tognetti, Maria Beatrice Mercuri, Alice Rinaudo, and Valentina Martinescu. Italy is coming off a strong World Cup season, marked by two individual victories—one by Malan and another by Matteo Cicinelli, who triumphed in the opening event in Cairo. At the 2024 European Championships in Budapest, the Italian team claimed five medals. The European Championships in Madrid begin today with the women's individual qualification rounds. On Tuesday, July 22, the men's qualification events will take place. Both finals are scheduled for Friday, July 25, while the weekend of July 26–27 will be dedicated to relays, starting with the mixed relay followed by the gender-specific events.
