Mary Rorro: where psychiatry meets music

The Sydney-based Italian-Australian newspaper Allora! has published a profile of Mary Rorro, the renowned psychiatrist and violinist with Italian roots. The article, written by Ketty Millecro, traces the multifaceted career of a woman who combines medicine, music and songwriting.

In addition to her clinical work, Rorro is a composer and serves as president of the Committee for Music, Medicine and the Humanities within the American Medical Women’s Association. In the interview, she speaks with emotion and gratitude about her parents, Dr. Gilda and Dr. Louis Rorro, recalling that as early as the age of four she told them she wanted to become a doctor. From them, she inherited both her love of medicine and her passion for music.

Rorro often weaves music and the arts into psychiatric practice, emphasizing their psychological and cognitive impact and their potential role in healing. The article also highlights her strong connection to Italy, a bond encouraged by her parents through frequent travels. She describes the Italian tricolour as “a beautiful song” and says that each visit to Italy inspires her to compose new music.

Among her works are Filitalia, an anthem written for the international charitable organization of the same name, and Bell’Italia, a musical tribute to the country of her roots.
