Sept. 4 - Italian energy arrives in South Africa thanks to Ansaldo and Fata. A consortium led by GDF Suez, a major player in global energy with an active presence in the supply chain, awarded Ansaldo Energia, a company jointly controlled by Finmeccanica and First Reserve Corporation, and Fata, a leader in the design and construction of industrial plants, a contract to build two open cycle power plants for the production of electricity in South Africa. The facilities will be used to meet the needs of the country during periods of increased energy demand. The total value of the order amounts to approximately €440 million. In about two years, the Avon power plant of Durban will generate energy amounting to 670 MW, while in the Port Elizabeth area Dedisa will provide energy equal to 335 MW. Ansaldo Energia will supply six AE94.2 gas turbines (four for Avon and two for Dedisa) with generators and auxiliary systems. In addition, Ansaldo Energia will provide civil works for both sites, transportation, construction and commissioning of the relevant portion of the provision for a total value of approximately €280 million. Fata will provide, through its EPC Power division and its South African Branch, the mechanical and electrical installations for a total value of €160 million. The contract also includes the construction of the substation and the interface with the power grid, storage and distribution of fuel and water treatment. "Particular attention - says a note from Finmeccanica - has been paid to environmental and sustainability issues, deeply felt in South Africa." Thus continues Finmeccanica Group’s international expansion, adding to an already stable presence in different geographical areas key to its areas of activity: Europe and the United States, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East.
