Berlin - Marking the 25th anniversary of the passing of Giuseppe Sinopoli, the Philharmonia Orchestra London returns to the German capital on October 15th at the Philharmonie Berlin after a prolonged absence. This homecoming highlights the profound historical bond connecting the orchestra, the city of Berlin, and Giuseppe Sinopoli, who served as Principal Conductor from 1984 to 1994 and decisively shaped the ensemble’s artistic evolution.
Under the baton of Robin Ticciati, the Philharmonia Orchestra will pay tribute to the legendary Italian conductor. The concert—organized in cooperation with the Ministry for Sport and Youth, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Philharmonia Orchestra—opens with the Prelude and Love Death (Liebestod) from Richard Wagner's opera Tristan und Isolde, one of the most extraordinary pages in music history.
At the heart of the evening is Pour un Livre à Venise, Vol. 1 (1975), a rare and precious composition by Giuseppe Sinopoli characterized by immense poetic density. The work evokes Venice, a city that represented far more than a mere geographical location to Sinopoli: it was a space of cultural memory, a symbol of history, myth, and identity.
Although it does not sit within Sinopoli's core conducting repertoire, Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 is also featured on the program, exploring themes deeply aligned with his artistic universe. The interplay of nature, memory, and human aspiration running through the symphony mirrors that quest for deeper meaning which defined Sinopoli’s interpretations.
