Paris - Exports of Parmigiano Reggiano continue to climb, with France firmly cementing its position as the brand’s top European market. The Consortium is showcasing this success at SIAL, running from October 17 to 21 at Paris Nord Villepinte, backed by striking figures: in 2025, exports surpassed domestic sales in Italy for the first time, and over the first eight months of 2026, the upward trend accelerated further. Exports now account for 54.8% of total sales, nearing the 50,000-tonne milestone, compared to 51.5% during the same period in 2025.
In France, Parmigiano Reggiano remains the best-selling hard Italian cheese, capturing 57.2% of the market volume. According to Nielsen retail sales data in France updated to early September, approximately 3,950 tonnes were sold since the start of 2026, holding steady with 2025 (-0.5%) and marking a 2.6% increase over 2024. This generated a turnover of 105.3 million euros, up 2.1% from 2025, with an average retail price of 26.60 euros per kilo.
"Since last year, more than half of all Parmigiano Reggiano is sold abroad, and that share continues to grow, currently standing at 54.8%. Investing in international markets is a strategic choice for us, starting with France, our primary market in Europe," reiterates Nicola Bertinelli, President of the Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium. "At SIAL, we are meeting with operators and distributors to solidify long-standing bonds of trust and expand the presence of Parmigiano Reggiano on shelves and in restaurants alike."
