Tuscan wines can’t resist the call of the Chinese market

Feb. 12 – China calls, and Italian wines answer, in particular those produced in Tuscany. According to data provided by Nomisma (a consultancy that carries out research and economic consulting for companies, associations and public administrations) indicates that in 2013 exports to China increased by 11 %, with PDO red wines from Tuscany marking a +37.5 % increase. This is a truly remarkable achievement that reinforces Tuscany’s primacy on the Chinese market compared to other Italian regions, as the former holds 24% of the shares of PDO and PGI red wines. It thus comes as no surprise that on Feb. 16-17, Anteprime di Toscana and Buy Wine will host, in the Fortezza da Basso, 18 Chinese importers among others. Tuscan wines are also a worldwide success, with great expectations for Brazil and North America, where Tuscan wines, in 2013, brought home excellent results. PDO red wines increased their sales by 4% in the U.S. and 8,3% in Brazil, while PDO white wines increased by 21% in North America (especially Canada - where exports were six times higher than in 2012) and Brazil, where exports were duplicated.

BUY WINE
Tuscan wines have never been more united. Thanks to the event Anteprime di Toscana, for the first time in the history of the region, all Tuscan denominations will have their preview simultaneously. The event takes place within the fourth edition of Buy Wine (Florence, February15-17), the international workshop organized by the Toscana Promozione to promote international trade. 2014 will be dedicated to new labels, and will see the participation of 250 Tuscan producers and 290 buyers from all over the world, engaged in two days of B2B meetings. “The current level of exports,” says Silvia Burzagli, Deputy Director of Toscana Promozione, “are very encouraging, and we hope that Buy Wine, where there will be 258 Tuscan producers and 296 international buyers from 33 countries, will see the same level of success. An important share of the market is taken by the United States (present with 56 buyers), Canada (with 30 buyers), Brazil (20 buyers), China and South Korea (18 buyers each), Japan (16 buyers), Denmark (13 buyers) and Vietnam (10 buyers). Together, they account for over 61% of the participating international buyers."
