June 1 - On Sunday, June 7 (at 7pm), the exhibition hall of the Italian Cultural Institute in Cairo hosts the opening of the exhibition "Alessandro Monti. Italian design on Egyptian textiles."
The event, organized by the Italian Institute of Culture in collaboration with collector and curator Francis Amin, will exhibit works by the Italian designer, who resides in Alexandria, Egypt. The event is promoted by Gionata Ricci Alunni of the Cultural Association "Promo Italia," and will give the public the opportunity to discover and admire the artist's work. Monti, now ninety years old, began his career in 1956 with the application of Italian design to local fabrics, inserting floral decorations, as well as ancient Egyptian and Islamic ornaments. Between 1970 and 2001, Monti was president of the Italian Charity Society of Alexandria, and since 1977 he is President of the Institute Dante Alighieri, where he "witnesses over and over again the miracle of hearing girls and boys speak Italian." THE ARTIST
Alessandro Monti was born in 1925 in Naples. In 1928, his family moved from Suez to Alexandria, Egypt, where it operated in the port sector.
When Egypt established the Spinning and Weaving Agency, Monti decided to be part of it and to open within it a design studio. To the various newspapers announcements and notices on art fabrics answers the young Tatiana, who Monti later married in 1957. Alessandro and Tatiana worked together for nine years, producing fabrics that could meet the demand of the State-run factories. In 1965, Monti met Egyptian President Nasser, who appreciated and helped enhance the work of the Italian master. The King of Italy Umberto II would also pay a visit to Alexandria, where, accompanied by an Italian delegation, the King offered Monti the Crown of Italy, the highest decoration granted by the Italian royal family.
