Refugees, Sant'Egidio: new arrivals from Ethiopia via humanitarian corridors

Addis Ababa - On Monday, April 15th, 97 refugees from the Horn of Africa will arrive at Fiumicino Airport on a regular flight of Ethiopian Airlines from Addis Ababa, thanks to the humanitarian corridors promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Italian Episcopal Conference in collaboration with the Ministries of the Interior and Foreign Affairs. The 97 individuals, mostly of Eritrean and Somali nationality, had been refugees in Ethiopia for some time and were partly referred by family members or friends residing in Italy, some of whom had previously arrived via humanitarian corridors. Some family units will therefore be welcomed by relatives, ensuring easier and faster integration into our country, while others will find accommodation in homes provided by the civil society support network, which enables this widespread reception in eight Italian regions (Lazio, Abruzzo, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Liguria, Lombardy, Sicily, Tuscany), and will be started on a path to integration: for minors through immediate school enrollment, for adults through Italian language learning, and, once refugee status is obtained, entry into the workforce.
