Custonaci’s living nativity returns to the historic Mangiapane Cave

Paris – With the holiday season approaching, the town of Custonaci in the Trapani area is preparing to welcome visitors for the upcoming edition of the Living Nativity, held annually in the historic Mangiapane Cave. In an interview, Mayor Fabrizio Fonte shared a few updates and confirmations for this year, including the event’s re-listing among the "100 Major Events" by the Sicilian Region’s Department of Tourism—a recognition that reinforces the cultural and touristic significance of this celebration. Visitors will have the opportunity to embark on a true journey through time, exploring a path that faithfully recreates rural 19th-century Sicily. Starting from the historic center of Custonaci, at the foot of the Marian Sanctuary, the route continues to Mangiapane Cave, accessible by a shuttle bus service.

Looking ahead, the mayor announced plans to submit a dossier to the Ministry of Culture to seek UNESCO recognition for the landscape area encompassing the Monte Cofano reserve and Mangiapane Cave. This territory is a genuine treasure: the cave, inhabited since the Upper Paleolithic, is an important archaeological site and is often used as a setting for film and television, with recent productions such as The Lions of Sicily and Makari.
