New book by diplomat Federico Lorenzo Ramaioli explores North Korea's governance

Pyongyang - Mimesis has published a new book by diplomat Federico Lorenzo Ramaioli, titled “The Laws of the Hermit Kingdom: How North Korea is Governed”, which delves into the intricate world of North Korea. Drawing from leaders' speeches and official texts, Ramaioli examines the country's political and legal system, foundational myths, and the absolute ideals that shape the Pyongyang regime, exploring both its self-perception and internal operations.

The book covers key topics such as the Kim dynasty's leadership, propaganda, the economy, and the Juche ideology centered on self-reliance and independence. Ramaioli also investigates how Kim Il-sung and his successors built and sustained their power, establishing a personality cult that permeates every aspect of North Korean life. The leader's figure is pivotal, not only as a political head but also as a “paternal leader,” almost a divine presence.

An intriguing aspect of the book is its exploration of how ancient Confucian and shamanic beliefs intertwine with socialism to create North Korea’s unique governance model. The regime has gradually distanced itself from Marxism, incorporating ancestral traditions into its political framework.

Federico Lorenzo Ramaioli, PhD, is an Italian diplomat and lawyer currently serving as Deputy Head of Mission at the Italian Embassy in Doha. He is a Senior Research Associate at gLAWcal (UK) and has previously collaborated with the chairs of Legal Philosophy and Legal Methodology at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan.
