Italy’s space design excellence shines in Vienna

nnovation, Beauty, Inspiration – this was the title of the event dedicated to space design, organized yesterday by the Embassy of Italy in Vienna and the Italian Permanent Mission to the United Nations in collaboration with the European Space Policy Institute. The goal was to highlight the synergy between technological innovation and design, key elements of Italian excellence, applied to the space sector.

The event featured the multimedia exhibition Design Spaziale – Italiano, promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After London, Prague, and Paris, Vienna is the latest stop of this traveling exhibition, born from a project by Annalisa Dominoni and Benedetto Quaquaro, professors at the Department of Design at the Politecnico di Milano, where Space Design is part of a unique master’s degree program.

The event was held on the occasion of the Technical-Scientific Subcommittee of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, hosted at the ESPI headquarters, a think tank focused on space policies. It provided the opportunity to present to space agencies, the diplomatic and scientific community, the reality of space design, defined by the Politecnico professors as a bridge between "science, technology, innovation, and beauty."

The professors emphasized the importance of space design, highlighting how well-designed environments and objects can improve the quality of life and the performance of astronauts in orbit and, in the near future, on the Moon. To underline the value of this approach, astronaut Luca Parmitano, the guest of honor at the event, shared his perspective.
