Sydney – On 21 August at 6:00 p.m., the Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney will host “Traces of Italy: Augusto Lorenzini – The Legacy of a 19th-Century Decorative Artist” with Dr Matthew Stephens and Sonia Audoly. This is the third event in the series “Traces of Italy: Legacies of Italians Shaping Australia’s Cultural Landscape”, a conversation delving into the fascinating story of Augusto Lorenzini and his impact on interior design in Sydney during the 1880s and 1890s. Born in Rome, Lorenzini honed his skills in design and painting between Italy, Paris, and London before arriving in Sydney in 1883. Librarian and researcher Dr Matthew Stephens (Museums of History NSW) will present some of his exquisite creations for Sydney’s elite, recently rediscovered in a long-forgotten archive. Designer, stylist, and educator Sonia Audoly (Design Centre Enmore) will then explore the enduring influence of Lorenzini’s decorative world through the restoration of an extraordinary Italianate villa in Queen’s Park in the 1990s.
